Photographing Lisa Fonssagrives atop the Eiffel Tower in 1939 was a defining moment in the early career of fashion photographer Erwin Blumenfeld (1897 - 1969). Set against a backdrop of Paris, Fonssagrives is pictured wearing a Lucien Lelong dress in what became Blumenfeld’s best-known commission while living in Paris. After moving to New York, Blumenfeld established a career as one of the most prolific and innovative post-war fashion photographers. He created dozens of iconic Vogue covers and developed lucrative relationships with the most progressive advertising clients of the era, including Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden, among others.
